The sounds of Fall.....

The temperature is dropping, the leaves are dropping. The air has a crisp feel to it. I can dig my cute coats out of the closet. I love Fall.

However;

This cooling off also means they turn on the heat in my apartment, which includes an extremely loud banging/hissing from the radiator in my bedroom. Every night without fail I am startled awake by the sounds. My heart pounds and I leap towards the baseball bat I keep by my bed (hey it's NYC and I live alone!) before realizing the clanking is not a burglar coming to steal my extensive collection of books and Target furniture, but just the sound of the radiator expelling heat. Googling the issue has turned up nothing useful. It's going to be a LOOOONG winter...sigh.

OK, this is totally dorky, but it helped me. I grew up with forced air and never knew the joys of steam heat until I got my first apartment after graduating from college. LIke you , the heat came on in the middle of the night one cool night and I nearly had a heart attack. Once I figured it out, I told myself that the banging and hissing was the sound of my own personal dragon protecting me. Then when it woke up throughout the winter, I would smile at the thought of my dragon keeping me safe and warm and fall right back to sleep.

I told you it was dorky.

You know, you may be on to something! Instead of looking at the noise as an annoyance, turn it into something protective or silly.....

Hmmmm clanking & hissing now = hot strong man with steel pipe warding off all the other men to declare him for myself!!
